Photograph album, ca.1900.

Photograph album containing 21 pictures of the exteriors of large houses, mostly built in the shingle or Colonial Revival style. The photographer, the compiler of the album, and the location of the homes are all unknown. However, the architects of about half the houses are identified, typed on a slip of paper inserted into the front of the album. The architects are Longfellow, Alden and Harlow; Babb, Cook & Willard; McKim, Mead & White; Shaw & Hummel; Arthur Little; Hartwell & Richardson; and William R. Emerson. Several of the houses were new when the photos were taken, as evidenced by the construction debris which can be seen around a couple of houses, and by the small size of the trees and shrubs in the landscape. One house is a city dwelling; the others are in suburban, or perhaps even rural, settings. Several homes are built entirely or partly of stone; others are built of brick or covered with wood siding or shingles. Many of them have porches, and a number have towers or dormer windows.
